Why partners need different calorie targets
Two people rarely need the same amount of food. Body size, sex, age, activity, and goals all change the number — so a one-size plan leaves one partner over-eating and the other under-fuelled. This calculator works out each person's daily calorie and macro target separately, then shows a combined household total so you can shop and cook for both at once.
How the numbers are worked out
For each partner we estimate resting metabolism (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, multiply by an activity factor to get total daily burn (TDEE), then adjust for the chosen goal — a deficit to lose, maintenance to stay the same, or a modest surplus to gain. A shared diet style sets the protein / carb / fat split, since most couples cook the same food.
- Each partner gets their own calorie target and protein / carb / fat grams.
- Together adds both up — the daily calories and macros for the household.
- A sensible 1,200-calorie floor is never crossed.
Cooking one meal for two different goals
Different targets don't mean cooking twice. Build the meal around shared, protein-rich ingredients, then adjust portions and the calorie-dense extras (oils, grains, dressings) per plate. Swoodie does this for you — it keeps a separate target for each of you, suggests meals you'll both enjoy, and builds one shared shopping list. Stuck on what to make tonight? Frequently asked questions
How many calories do a couple need per day?
It depends on each person's body size, sex, age, activity, and goal — partners usually need different amounts. This calculator estimates each partner's daily target separately and then adds them together for a combined household total you can shop and cook around.
Why do my partner and I get different numbers?
Calorie needs scale with body weight, height, sex, age, activity level, and whether you're trying to lose, maintain, or gain. Two people with different bodies or goals will almost always have different daily targets, even eating the same meals.
Can we still cook one meal if our targets differ?
Yes. Cook a shared base of lean protein and vegetables, then adjust portion sizes and calorie-dense extras like oils, grains, and dressings per plate. Swoodie keeps a separate target for each of you and tailors portions automatically.
Is the couples calorie calculator free?
Yes — it's completely free, works in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up.
